Michael Furman speaks on photography and the automobile and warms us up for Andrew Taylor’s Foundations of Photography class in March. Featuring our 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza.

Dr. Frederick Simeone on Michael Furman, from our book “The Spirit of Competition”:

Michael Furman brought his equipment and four other staff to the museum for several months to photograph the collection. Watching him work made brain surgery seem uncomplicated. His attention to detail, his meticulous use of light, his unfailing tenacity to achieve photo realism, but with an artistic bent, was an inspiring education.

First of all, let it be said without question that his images are true photographs. He pays critical attention to ascertain that the image is exactly what is seen by the eye, but by an eye which is properly positioned to visualize an object bathed in undistorted luminance.

To do this, Michael corrects the faults inherent with the casual observation of an automobile. These universal distortions include the fact that the observer is usually standing up, looking down on the car in a way which belies its true profile. Most of these cars were conceived as a side elevation so that the eye of the creator perceived a true profile. By placing his camera at ground level and shooting from a distance of often over 70 feet to reduce parallax flaws, he captures the true perspective of the designer and not a compromise generated by the limitations of space. He prepares the environment eliminating all ambient reflections. Then the car is blanketed with a single glow of uniform light from above, the source being a light box longer and wider than the car.

The final result, as you will see, is truth. It is not fantasy because any artiface is anathema to Mr. Furman.
